Happy New Year! The first edition of the SIPET Highlights 2024 is out, bringing you the updates and news on energy transition from the Southeast Asia Information Platform for the Energy Transition (SIPET)

Redefining Myanmar’s Energy Future

Jackson Downing, Senior Communications and Project Specialist and Min Chan Win, Managing Director from Smart Myanmar Power (SPM), share insights on rural electrification and long-term energy sustainability strategies in Myanmar. Jackson highlights the shift from mini-grids to commercial and industrial solar projects through a new partnership with the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP).

“SMEs are desperate for renewable energy, but Myanmar’s solar ecosystem is still in its infancy.
If we can remove the hurdles facing solar development and finance, the energy transition will be dramatic and life changing."

Learn how this initiative finances over 100 sites, supplying 57 MW and unlocking $60 million in solar investment here.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Indonesia, along with the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), is implementing the Strategic Exploration of Economic Mitigation Potentials through Renewables (Explore) project from 2018-2025. This project aims to boost private sector investment in Renewable Energy (RE) and strengthen economic and social development options by ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply through RE.

It forecasts the deployment of renewable energy technologies in electricity, transport and heat to 2028 while also exploring key challenges to the industry and identifying barriers to faster growth.
ABOUT CASEThe Project "Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE)" aims to shift the energy sector narrative in Southeast Asia towards an evidence-based clean energy transition, with the aim to increase political ambition to comply with the Paris Agreement. SIPET is part of an effort by CASE to accomplish the shift of the energy sector narrative by supporting: (a) research and evidence, (b) transparency and mapping, (c) dialogue with non-energy sector stakeholders, (d) technical assistance on clean energy, and (e) promoting public discourse on the energy transition.CASE is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), and jointly implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and international and local expert organisations in the area of sustainable energy transformation and climate change: Agora Energiewende and NewClimate Institute (regional level), the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) in Indonesia, the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) in the Philippines, the Energy Research Institute (ERI) and Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) in Thailand.
