This February, the Southeast Asia Information Platform for the Energy Transition (SIPET), in collaboration with the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), provides an updated synopsis of efforts to promote energy transition and regional cooperation through the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) within Southeast Asia.

The ASEAN Power Grid (APG) is a strategic effort by ASEAN member states to enhance energy security, economic prosperity, and sustainable development through a connected electricity network. This commitment aims to create a resilient, interconnected, and environmentally sustainable energy framework, fostering shared growth, renewable energy integration, and energy cooperation for the region's future.

Advancing Grid Connectivity

In this month’s Energy Transition Blog, Nadhilah Shani, an expert in Power and Renewable Energy Policy from the ASEAN Centre for Energy delves into the pivotal role of power interconnectivity in Southeast Asia's energy transition.

The region's energy landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, underscored by the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative, which aims to enhance regional interconnectivity and ensure a sustainable energy future.

Report Launch “Towards a Green and Inclusive Sector in the Greater Mekong Subregion”

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) hosted the Report Launch “Towards a Green and Inclusive Sector in the Great Mekong Subregion” on February 7, 2024, highlighting the significance of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG). It convened over 50 professionals from various energy sectors to discuss the rapidly expanding power sector in the Mekong region — where energy demand is expected to triple by 2050 (from 486 TWh in 2021 to 1,645 TWh) — and the potential for a regional renewable energy grid to support this growth sustainably.

ASEAN Infrastructure Fund (AIF)

The ASEAN Infrastructure Fund (AIF) is a dedicated fund established by the ASEAN member states and ADB to address the ASEAN region’s infrastructure development needs by mobilizing regional savings to strengthen regional connectivity, including the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative.

ABOUT CASEThe Project "Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE)" aims to shift the energy sector narrative in Southeast Asia towards an evidence-based clean energy transition, with the aim to increase political ambition to comply with the Paris Agreement. SIPET is part of an effort by CASE to accomplish the shift of the energy sector narrative by supporting: (a) research and evidence, (b) transparency and mapping, (c) dialogue with non-energy sector stakeholders, (d) technical assistance on clean energy, and (e) promoting public discourse on the energy transition.CASE is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), and jointly implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and international and local expert organisations in the area of sustainable energy transformation and climate change: Agora Energiewende and NewClimate Institute (regional level), the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) in Indonesia, the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) in the Philippines, the Energy Research Institute (ERI) and Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) in Thailand.
