Welcome to the May issue of SIPET Highlights! This month, we are excited to showcase a project of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) that is transforming a district around a coal-fired power plant into a sustainable, smart city. As part of SIPET’s Labor Day commemoration, this edition focuses on equipping professionals for the evolving energy landscape.

From Coal to Clean: Mae Moh Smart City’s Path to Sustainability

In celebration of Labor Day, and as part of our series of profiles, which highlight the transformative work of professionals in the clean energy transition, we interviewed Ketsirin Paengsen, Head of Mae Moh Smart City, to hear the latest updates, challenges, and strategies of the project as it moves from coal to clean energy. Read the interview here.

CASE for Southeast Asia launched its campaign, “Humans of the Energy Transition- Thailand”. This campaign showcases interviews with people in Bangkok, who share their experiences and observations on the country’s current energy situation. The campaign not only raises awareness about the energy transition but also highlights the concerns and role of communities, promotes greater public engagement and builds support for sustainable energy initiatives.

Examples like these, from organizations such as EGAT and CASE for Southeast Asia, can make an impact and help to accelerate the energy transition in the region while improving people's lives. SIPET invites clean energy professionals in the region to share their impactful work. Submit your story here to inform, inspire, and drive action.

Your contributions will play a crucial role in showcasing the region's progress and potential in energy innovation and implementation. Submit your story and be featured in the next SIPET newsletter!

The Innovation Regions for a Just Energy Transition supports stakeholders in coal-dependent regions to plan and implement pathways toward a low-carbon energy system. Funded by the Internationale Klimaschutzinitiative (BMU-IKI) and implemented by the Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) from 2022 to 2026, the project focuses on regional economic transformations. It collaborates with the government, industry, unions, communities, civil society, and academia, facilitating peer-to-peer exchange, learning, and policy dialogue internationally through a knowledge hub.

ABOUT CASE

The Project “Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE)” aims to shift the energy sector narrative in Southeast Asia towards an evidence-based clean energy transition, with the aim to increase political ambition to comply with the Paris Agreement. SIPET is part of an effort by CASE to accomplish the shift of the energy sector narrative by supporting: (a) research and evidence, (b) transparency and mapping, (c) dialogue with non-energy sector stakeholders, (d) technical assistance on clean energy, and (e) promoting public discourse on the energy transition.

CASE is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), and jointly implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and international and local expert organisations in the area of sustainable energy transformation and climate change: Agora Energiewende and NewClimate Institute (regional level), the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) in Indonesia, the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) in the Philippines, the Energy Research Institute (ERI) and Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) in Thailand.
