Connected and Resilient: 57 years of ASEAN

This issue of SIPET Connect provides updates on a diverse and growing set of Energy Transition activities and events across the region. These include:

  • a perspective on Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week 2024 (ISEW 2024);
  • a feature on the partnership between ASEAN and the USAID Southeast Asia Smart Power Program, which includes capacity-building for utilities, financial institutions, investors, developers, and government officials; and technical assistance to support regional energy trade and integration of clean energy sources;
  • new research by the NewClimate Institute and Agora Energiewende, ‘Navigating the Transition to Net Zero in Southeast Asia’, which outlines a framework for integrating policy, technology, and finance for the clean energy transition across Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand;
  • insights from the report from CASE Indonesia entitled, ‘Coal’s Endgame: Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) of Early Retirement Coal-Fired Power Plant (CFPP) Versus CFPP with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)’, which compares the costs and benefits of retiring Indonesia’s existing CFPPs early versus retrofitting them with CCS; and
  • a story about the Energy Transition, a profile of a 57-year-old Thai resident who shares what his life was like before and after electrification.

And as usual a list of resources shared on SIPET by our SIPET members:

  • upcoming Energy Transition events in Southeast Asia;
  • new reports on the Energy Transition for your reading list; and
  • job opportunities related to the Energy Transition in Southeast Asia.
What to Expect at ISEW 2024

The International Sustainable Energy Week 2024 (ISEW 2024) is just around the corner. This flagship event under the GIZ Energy Programme Indonesia/ASEAN serves as a platform for dialog, exchange of ideas, and innovative thinking to advance Indonesia’s energy system. It is part of a longstanding collaboration between the governments of Indonesia and Germany.

To give our readers a preview of what the event holds for them, SIPET interviewed Elisabeth Tinschert, Energy Programme Director, GIZ Indonesia/ASEAN. She told us about key sessions and speakers, the relevance of this year’s theme ‘United Towards a Sustainable FutuRE’, and the stakeholder dialogue the event hopes to bring about for Indonesia’s clean energy future. In the News

In case you missed them, here are some of recent energy-related news and policy developments in Southeast Asia.

Energy Transition Spotlight

As we commemorate ASEAN’s 57th Foundation Day, we bring you the story of Pramuan Wisetsak, a 57-year-old Bangkok resident from a rural background who shares what life was pre and post electrification of his village. In the latest video of the “Humans of the Energy Transition- Thailand” campaign by CASE for Southeast Asia he says it is unimaginable to live without electricity in a place like Bangkok today. He also urges the government to invest in solar cells, which he says he can use when there is a shortfall in regular electricity supply.

Toolbox

SIPET is an open-access platform envisioned and designed to support energy transition stakeholders to share and gain insights, resources, and knowledge to create a holistic picture of the energy transition in the region.

SIPET offers tools and resources developed to help clean energy professionals understand the current state of energy systems in Southeast Asia, identify areas for improvement, and track progress over time.
