The Next Chapter: Celebrating SIPET's Journey and Looking Ahead

Welcome to the August 2026 edition of SIPET Connect

Over the past five years, the Southeast Asia Information Platform for the Energy Transition (SIPET) has grown into a trusted regional knowledge platform, connecting policymakers, researchers, development partners, and energy stakeholders with the information and tools needed to support Southeast Asia's clean energy transition.

As the CASE for Southeast Asia project nears its conclusion later this year, SIPET Connect has also reached its final edition. SIPET Connect was developed as tool to share regular updates on news and trends related to the energy transition across Southeast Asia.  Over the past few years, SIPET grown into a trusted regional knowledge platform that brings together data, insights, publications, and learning resources to support Southeast Asia's energy transition. While this newsletter comes to a close with this final issue, the mission of SIPET will continue.

In this final edition of SIPET Connect, we look ahead to what comes next. In our Special Feature, Silvira Ayu Rosalia from the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and Maximilian Heil, Regional Project Coordinator for CASE for Southeast Asia at GIZ Thailand come together for a conversation on SIPET's evolution, the importance of regional ownership, and what the platform's transition to the ASEAN Energy Database System (AEDS) means for the future. Together, they reflect on the journey so far and share how SIPET's knowledge, tools, and resources will continue supporting Southeast Asia's clean energy transition under ASEAN's stewardship.

In our Explainer Series, we unpack the International Energy Agency's latest Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2026, exploring why critical minerals have become central to the global clean energy transition and what the report means for Southeast Asia as demand for renewable energy technologies continues to grow.

As always, we also bring you a curated selection of recent publications and resources from across Southeast Asia's clean energy community.

It has been a pleasure and a privilege over the past several years bringing you updates on the activities, trends, and especially the voices of the energy transition from across Southeast Asia.

— Drishti Chhibber and Peter du Pont, GIZ Consultants, Editors of SIPET Connect

 Special Feature

In this special feature, Peter du Pont speaks with Maximilian Heil, Regional Project Coordinator for the CASE programme at GIZ, and Silvira Ayu Rosalia, Senior Energy Statistician at the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), about SIPET's journey and its transition to the ASEAN Energy Database System (AEDS).

Together, they reflect on the vision that shaped SIPET, the lessons learned from building an open-access regional knowledge platform, and the importance of making trusted energy data accessible to everyone—from policymakers and researchers to students and practitioners. The conversation also explores why ACE is the natural long-term home for SIPET, how the platform's most valued resources—including the Project Mapping Tool and Power Transition Progress Tool—will be integrated into AEDS, and what users can expect as the platform evolves under ASEAN's stewardship.

Most importantly, Max and Silvira share a common message: while the CASE project is coming to a close, SIPET's mission continues. Through its integration into AEDS, the platform's knowledge, tools, and growing community will continue to support evidence-based policymaking, regional cooperation, and Southeast Asia's clean energy transition for years to come.

Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2026:
Securing the Building Blocks of the Energy Transition

The clean energy transition depends on more than renewable energy technologies—it also relies on a secure and resilient supply of the minerals that make those technologies possible. Lithium, copper, nickel, cobalt, graphite, and rare earth elements are essential for electric vehicles, batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, and modern electricity grids. As countries accelerate their transition to clean energy, ensuring reliable access to these minerals is becoming a strategic priority.

The International Energy Agency's (IEA) Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2026, released in July 2026, provides the latest assessment of global critical mineral markets, examining supply, demand, investment trends, and the policy actions needed to build more resilient and diversified supply chains. The report highlights that while demand for critical minerals continues to grow rapidly, investment has slowed, supply chains remain highly concentrated, and geopolitical tensions are creating new risks for energy security.

Continuing the Conversation

Every edition of SIPET Connect has been built around a simple idea: that sharing knowledge, ideas, and experiences can help accelerate Southeast Asia's energy transition.

Over the years, this newsletter has featured expert perspectives, emerging research, practical tools, and stories from across the region, reflecting the diverse people and partnerships driving progress. More importantly, it has helped foster a community committed to learning from one another and advancing evidence-based energy planning.

As this chapter comes to a close, we hope the conversations sparked through SIPET Connect continue—across institutions, across borders, and through the next generation of regional collaboration.

The challenges of the energy transition continue to evolve, and so will the need for trusted knowledge, shared experiences, and strong partnerships. We are excited to see this community continue to grow and shape Southeast Asia's clean energy future.

Thank you for reading, contributing, and being part of the SIPET community. Here's to the next chapter!

ABOUT CASEThe Project "Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE)" aims to shift the energy sector narrative in Southeast Asia towards an evidence-based clean energy transition, with the aim to increase political ambition to comply with the Paris Agreement. SIPET is part of an effort by CASE to accomplish the shift of the energy sector narrative by supporting: (a) research and evidence, (b) transparency and mapping, (c) dialogue with non-energy sector stakeholders, (d) technical assistance on clean energy, and (e) promoting public discourse on the energy transition.CASE is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), and jointly implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and international and local expert organisations in the area of sustainable energy transformation and climate change: Agora Energiewende and NewClimate Institute (regional level), the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) in Indonesia, the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) in the Philippines, the Energy Research Institute (ERI) and Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) in Thailand.
